In addition to law enforcement, we provide the resources, personnel and procedures proactively promote safety on campus. Homecoming. What does this mean to you? To me, it means literally coming home…to family and friends.

I've always enjoyed homecoming events. They remind me of the positive experiences I've had, encourage me to continue building on dreams and fulfilling commitments, but most importantly, to interact with friends and family. While reminiscing on those days gone by, we must not dwell too long in the past or we will miss out on contributing to a positive future.

Our community is rich in diversity, and our differences are what make our community unique and what strengthens our bond. The greatness of our community can be measured in many ways, most important is how we treat each other. We learn as youngsters to "Be nice," "Treat others how you want to be treated," "Be respectful," "Say 'please' and 'thank-you'." I was taught to smile as well; honestly, I think I was born smiling.

As community members, you should know that the UMW Board of Visitors, President Paino, and the President's Cabinet continue their commitment to public safety at UMW. I share this commitment and encourage you to provide me with your innovative ideas to improve our police services. I like the fact that we continue to work toward a positive path forward. This may not always be easy, but not trying creates a greater divide.

As your Chief of Police, I commit to listening to your needs and striving to be open and honest with community members. The men and women with whom I serve share this commitment. I believe maintaining a high level of professionalism within the police department serves to preserve the quality of public safety our citizens deserve. It also fosters collaborative efforts that result in constantly improving community relations and increasing confidence. We cannot do this alone. We need your help.

The University of Mary Washington Police Department embraces the opportunity to work with our diverse community, listening and implementing change as we forge strong relationships. Performing our duties with equality, honesty, integrity, and respect is paramount, and we strive to ensure we are accomplishing this each day. Our policing philosophy balances a foundation of traditional policing concepts with innovative and progressive methods to help us evolve with our community into the future.

As we transition into fall and the holiday season, I encourage each community member to pause and look for something positive. All of us have faced challenges the past 18 months, we should look to the future with optimism.
